The Process
We’ll start with an initial discussion of what I can do and what you would like. I have large format print samples you can see to help you chose a paper or canvas.
Guarantee
If I cannot get a satisfactory print, you don’t have to pay.
Materials
All material used are acid-free / PH neutral.
I print using HP Vivera pigment-based inks that can have permanence ratings up to 200 years depending on the paper.
I can print on a wide variety of papers and have the following 24 inch rolls in stock:
- Hahnemuhle Bamboo 290 gsm – 90% Bamboo fiber – 10% Cotton – natural white – warm tone
- Hahnemuhle Monet Canvas 410 gsm – 100% Cotton – fairly smooth woven pattern, matte finish – currently my favourite canvas
- Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Bright White 310 gsm – 100% Cotton – bright white, matte finish
- Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane 300 gsm – 75% Bagasse fiber – 25% cotton – natural white
- HP Premium Instant-Dry Gloss Photo Paper 260 gsm – feels like a traditional photo paper, gloss finish
- HP Premium Instant-Dry Satin Photo Paper 260 gsm – satin finish photo paper
- ILFORD GALERIE Gold Fibre Silk 310 gsm – satin finish, currently my favourite fine art photo paper
I also have 13×19 and 17×22 inch sheets of Ilford GFS.
Smaller prints on paper are printed with a 1 inch margin. Larger paper prints and all canvas prints will usually have a 2 inch margin. eg. an 11×14 print will be on a 13×16 inch piece of paper. Images on cut sheets will have margins based on the image size.
For mounting I typically use acid-free foam core and attach with t-hinges made from Filmoplast P90 tape (water removable). For matting I usually use a single or double mat of white Rising Museum Board which is 100% cotton. I also have a basic wood fibre mat in white (not archival).
Canvas prints are usually sprayed with Hanemuhle Protective Spray. This increases the print’s resistance to dirt, scuffing, water and UV rays.

Turnaround Time
I have no set turn around time. Based on initial discussions and current work load we’ll agree on a schedule. Expect it to take a couple of weeks. Generally I spend one day per week printing.
Print Finishing
For mounting prints I typically use acid free foam core and attach with t-hinges made from Filmoplast P90 tape (water removable). For prints 12×18 and smaller I usually mount using acid free paper corners. For matting I usually use a single or double mat of white Rising Museum Board which is 100% cotton. I also have a basic wood fibre mat in white (not archival), and I can order other mat colours. Call for pricing.
Canvas Gallery Wraps
Canvas prints are usually sprayed with Hanemuhle Protective Spray. This increases the print’s resistance to dirt, scuffing, water and UV rays. The canvas is then wrapped and stapled to three quarter inch stretcher bars. I use manufactured stretcher bars, usually an even number of inches in length.
On request I can mirror the edges of the image onto the first inch of margin. When wrapped on the stretcher bars this means there is image data on the sides of the frame. This can allow you to hang a canvas without a outer frame if that is what you would like.
| Image Size | Protective Spray | Wrapped & Stapled |
| 8×10 | $3.64 | $8.16 |
| 12×18 | $8.16 | $13.52 |
| 16×20 | $11.60 | $15.78 |
| 20×30 | $20.86 | $21.60 |
Note: print prices must be added to both spray and wrapping costs.
eg. 16×20 Monet Canvas total cost = print $28.23 + spray $11.60 + wrap $15.78 = $55.61
Equipment
The printer is an HP z3100. It prints using Vivera pigment based inks that include 11 colours and a gloss enhancer. It can print using 24 inch wide rolls of paper. The printer includes a built-in spectrophotometer using Gretag Macbeth iOne technology. This lets it build custom ICC profiles for any new paper.
The scanner is a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED scanner. It’s able to scan 35mm slides and negatives at 4000dpi producing an image at least 3500×5200 pixels. The file size is about 110mb assuming 16bit colour. Batch scanning is also available.
For photographing artwork I use a Canon 1Ds Mark II camera that’s able to create an image size of 4992 x 3328 in 12bit colour.
For image editing and print previewing I use a NEC display that is colour calibrated and profiled.
